Colors, patterns and composition

I like to employ vibrant colors like naphthol crimson, cadmium red deep and light hue, and permanent orange. I often incorporate gold and silver in my work. (The gold color symbolizes the light, sun and fire).

The patterns are essential elements is my paintings. We can find repetition of different variations on all kind of materials such as rugs, tea-sets etc.  Every Moroccan region is characterized by its own pattern; therefore we can identify the origin of object by the pattern it displays. I feel that my objects have their own identity.  While one might say “I’m from Marrakech” another might say “I’m from Fez”.

My composition set ups vary. In some cases I employ a single object and other times I gather multiple elements to create a big composition. I like to crop. I believe that we don’t have to tell everything, let’s give the viewer a chance to imagine the rest. As a light source I use a natural sunlight imitation ampoule to avoid the modification of color that can occur under studio conditions.  Before I had this special ampoule I was working under ambient light from the first until the last brushstroke.
